Comprehensive Gauge R&R Study

Course Objectives

These included the statistical concept, procedure, planning and performing a gauge R&R study, especially the variable data of  X̅ & R method is more thoroughly for the variations such as equipment variation (EV), appraiser variation (AV), and part variation (PV) on the repeatable measurements.

  • Understand the probabilities and statistics concepts that are used in Gauge R&R studies.
  • Understand the X̅ and R, and ANOVA methods are based on range and standard deviation approach respectively, and appropriate application for these methods.
  • Understand the issues involved in repeatability and reproducibility (R&R) studies
  • Plan and conduct the gauge R&R studies for attributes and variables data.
  • Understand the measurement variations for a measurement system.
  • Learn how to estimate the repeatability and reproducibility in a measurement process
  • Understand the attribute study is to ensure the effectiveness of the inspection system.
  • Estimate the probability of correct decision on product acceptance for certain Cp that will improve confidence when make a measurement.
  • Decide on the acceptance or suitability of a measurement system.
  • Avoid any significant measurement error on product acceptance and on control charts and/or process capability studies that will provide validity for statistical control.
  • Provide criteria for accepting new measuring equipment.
  • Comparisons between different measuring devices can be made more effectively.
  • Evaluate deficient gauges as opposed to incapable/out-of-control processes (False alarm – Risk of unnecessary action taken on In-control process).
  • Organize the format (just upload the data and the criteria of GR&R study are automatically calculated) to perform a GR&R study by using Microsoft Excel.
  • Understand and apply misclassification rates, which is less subjective.
  • Apply and interpret the results are obtained from the gauge R&R studies
  • Improve equipment maintenance, selection, calibration, and use.
  • Improve observer’s training and skill (as necessary).
  • Handle the issues from the measurement system during measuring and auditing.
  • Understand the purpose of gauge R&R studies that will reduce the risks of wrong decisions on product acceptability, and this will improve the total quality control.
