Hands-On CMM and GD&T

0

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:
 Distinguish types of technical drawing and its application that is used as graphic communication.
 Demonstrate proficiency in properly using the dimension components such as extrusion lines,
dimension lines, leader lines, arrowheads, and so on, and application of the dimensioning techniques.
 Understand the concept spatial visualization and demonstrate proficiency in applying of visualization
techniques, especially the six views of the orthographic projection.
 Understand the difference between first and third angle projection that are used in orthographic
projection.
 Prepare various types of section views that will help to illustrate the hidden views of an object clearly
and precisely, this will communicate more information about objects with complicated internal features
 Define the concept of auxiliary views and its application that shows the true shape to the objects with
inclined surface that are not always parallel to the regular planes of projection.
 Explain the three main dimensioning systems in used such as the metric, decimal inches and fractional
dimensioning.
 Understand certain important terms such as size is the overall dimensions are as specified, form is the
shapes specified must have the correct geometrical form, fit which is two parts must mate as specified
and function that is the product conforms to performance specification.
 Understand the two terms emphasized in GD&T; the reliability is the product performing its intended
function under stated conditions without failure for a given period, and the interchangeability is
defining the part able to replace without any modification.
 Understand product designers’ count on these geometric controls to provide design assurance that
the product will have the appropriate fit, form, function, and/or reliability. Understand geometric
tolerance symbols used to specify the functional relationship between or within part features and have
specific rules about them that have a direct bearing on how the part must be inspected and produce.
 Understand datum which is the starting point for the measurement and a specific description of the
tolerance zone so that the observer can decide if the product is within or out of specification, and also
the manufacture will produce the products are according to designer intention.
 Understand a variety of inspection equipment, especially like coordinate measuring machine (CMM),
and finding the appropriate measuring or gauging method that will properly evaluate the part feature
being controlled.
 Understand the contents and requirements of various types of the feature control frames, there
are including multi-segment and composite.

 Obtain knowledge and skills such as the term used, the concepts of coordinate system and
metrological requirement, the CMM application techniques and identifies various sources of errors
that affect measurements using a CMM
 Understand the functions of CMM that contains information such as magnitude and direction of the
elements, construction elements, and datum, and alignment, outcome products from function tasks
and part programing that automatically evaluate the characteristics on a specified object.
 Operate the CMM to set up part alignment, probing and construct features and using these features
to produce the outcome such as coordinates position, lengths, diameters, angles and geometric
variations.
 Demonstrate proficiency on the measurement controlled by geometric tolerance such as form,
orientation, location, runout and profile.
 Distinguish the measurement methods among the cylindricity, total runout position and concentricity,
and then evaluate the results.
 Avoid any argument regarding measurement results due to competency in handling measurement
process that follows the metrological requirements.
 Increase interest using CMM to obtain the measurement results as functions on product qualification
because they understand the concepts and application of GD&T system that use to total control on
the product quality

Target Audience

This program is suitable for Designer & Drafting personnel, tool makers, machinist, engineers, inspectors,
sale & marketing personnel and all others required to interpret or apply GD & T. This program will greatly
help companies striving to achieve high quality products to fulfil the high technology and complexity of
market demands

Methodology

Trainer Alex

 4.5

Alex has been working with multimedia applications since Adobe Flash was still Macromedia Flash and has taken up a Bachelor of Computer Science in Multimedia at University Putra Malaysia after the spark of interest. He explores different multimedia applications and several programming languages, such as Java and C#. He is a very fast learner, enabling him to improve himself in the departments he is most interested in. During his final year in UPM, he was a participant of Imagine Cup, and a finalist in the Malaysia levels, which heightened his experience
