Course Objectives

  • Analyse and explain the main concepts in dry cargo and tank chartering business, types of chartering, chartering and freight market practices, cargoes and trade routes and the role of shipbrokers/agency contracts.
  • Understand the format and content of main clauses in various charter party forms, the rights and liabilities of the main parties under charter parties, prepare draft charters and assess chartering decisions.
  • Evaluate the financial elements of charter parties, laytime issues, calculate voyage estimate/costs and freight for voyage chartering, consider the time charter equivalent (TCE) of freight.
  • Develop skills in shipbroking and chartering negotiations, bills of lading and dispute resolution issues
