Is a 4-work week possible? Tag your boss!

Email Subject: COME BACK TO OFFICE

That email notification we…love or hate?

With news covering on new Covid-19 clusters being identified each day, the majority of us have returned back to the office. Some people are quite comfortable with the idea of working from home, I for one did not really enjoy it.

I’m okay to take 1 day to work from home in the week. Beyond that, it just feels weird (but that’s just me).

Perhaps this is a good time to reflect on what worked well and what didn’t.
It may also be a good opportunity to make positive changes to the working culture.

#1 – The Dress Code

I hate wearing long sleeves and tucking in my shirt. It makes me feel constricted. I can only imagine the horror in some companies where you also need to wear a tie.

Polo tee, comfortable jeans and a nice pair of shoes/sneakers is how I like to roll. It’s practical. So, dressing down is something I definitely liked while I was working from home. If you work in a customer facing environment, I would say formal business attire is a must. Otherwise smart-casual is the way to go (not just on Fridays).

#2 – Working Hours

9-5 needs to go.

Not completely of course, there are some jobs where that timing is very much required (like banks and government agencies), though if you are doing a job in the background where only the output matters, I think being flexible is the way to go. It makes no sense to take leaves (half or full day) to go and sort out a personal matter.

Waking up at 5am just to beat the traffic so you can end up in the office at 9am is counterproductive. Which is more important, coming to the office on time or using your working hours productively (that means getting enough rest and sleep)?

#3 – The 5 Day Working Week (Most important!)

This one extends from point #2 and is a little controversial (okay, maybe not so little).

Is it necessary to work 5 days a week? Would you agree with me if I say Friday is not a productive week day? Most people come to work on Friday to spend time thinking of how they want to spend their weekend. Sanna Marin, the Prime Minister of Finland proposed in 2019 that the entire country have a 4-day workweek. Jacinda Arden, the Prime Minister of New Zealand is following suit. In fact, Perpetual Guardian in New Zealand is the first company in the world to successfully test and implement this solution. Although technicalities need to be worked out, allowing employees to spend more time with their families is the next workplace evolution!

What are your thoughts? Are Malaysians ready to take on such a move?
The real question, are we discipline enough, to gain our employer’s trust? #somethingtothinkabout
