Water.

Water is life. Is that why you were drawn to this article?

More than 70% of the surface of the earth is covered in it. It makes up for more than 60% of the human body. This means we can literally drown in water or drown in our own bodily fluids by means of Pulmonary Edema. Setting aside practical and hygienic reasons, human beings have a natural fascination and attraction to water. Does this have anything to do with the fact that all life originated from the ocean?

I don’t know but here are some of the reasons why we love it so much:

#1 – Listening
Sometimes, we don’t necessarily need to touch it, just being in its vicinity makes us feel good. Listening to the sound of running water is very calming. This includes the sounds of waves on a beach, crashing water from a waterfall, and flowing water in a river. Of course, most of us don’t have immediate access to this, so we compensate by listening to water pouring from a pipe in the bathroom. You can also take this one step further by placing water features in your home or having an aquarium. My personal favourite is listening to the rain while I go to sleep or just when I’m about to wake up.

#2 – Feeling
There’s nothing more soothing than having a nice warm shower after a hard day’s work. Couple that with an aromatic shower foam, you now have the perfect means for calming the nervous system, reducing stress, and relieving the feeling of anxiety. For those of you that have bath tubs, submergence in water can also help reduce pain and inflammation.

#3 – Exercising
The buoyancy effect of water makes it the #1 choice for low impact exercise. Impact is the main reason why you start developing issues with your joints as you start getting older. Nurturing children to learn swimming at a young age is the best thing you can do as a parent.

#4 – Reveling
For many, a perfect vacation is escaping to an island with white sandy beaches. Besides swimming, there are many other fun things we do with water; either above or below. We can surf, go jet-skiing, snorkelling, and diving. Why else do we have water parks?

When it comes to survival, some say human beings can go up to 3 weeks without food but only 3-4 days without drinking water. So, you can imagine the chaos that can ensue when access to water is denied. More so when it’s done repeatedly.
